What’s Christmas without a little craziness? I don’t know about you, but pretty much everyone I knows goes through an occasional bout of seasonal winter madness this time of year. It’s probably why schmaltzy, unchallenging music like Michael Buble’s Christmas album is so popular—you don’t have to really pay attention to it to feel “seasonal” or whatever. Chris Schlarb and Tom Steck’s five-song free-jazz Christmas improvisational release works using essentially the opposite mechanism as Buble’s music. It’s three songs of recognizable Christmas fare that meander delightfully off course, plus an epic ambient/noise take on Little Drummer Boy and a free-jazz freakout. Let the whole thing wash over you while you use these twenty-two minutes to take a deep breath and consider why you celebrate the holiday and who you celebrate it with and for.
